Dance creates space for the joy of movement, community and poetry without words. We train coordination, mobility and memory. With dance, we can give space for the desire to tell stories and make room for the body's wordless storytelling.

Dance for the elderly

With dance we maintain coordination, balance, mobility, rhythm and memory. We activate the brain and maintain the body’s motor skills. The dance is aimed at the healthy in a person and creates a space where everyone participates on their own terms. The focus is community and the joy where everyone can participate as they are today. The dance mostly takes place sitting on a chair. Associated props stimulate the imagination and memory, our tactile senses and are an aid for increased movement capacity.

Background

ElinMaria has many years of experience leading dance in care for the elderly and never ceases to marvel at the magic that occurs when the body is allowed to take place and the music’s catchiness awakens memories and social togetherness. I have facilitated three development projects for staff in leading dance at several nursing homes, including people with memory illness, in Sweden in 2013, 2014 and 2015. Among other things, in collaboration with Lycksele municipality, study association in Åre and Balletakademien in Umeå. From 2023 I have been holding regular dances at the elderly care center in Korpo Finland.
